EU Settlement Scheme Coming Soon!
What Employers Need to Know!
We all know it’s coming, but how do we act responsibly as an employer of EU citizens? In recent years EU citizens have made a positive impact on the productivity of businesses in Mansfield and Ashfield.
As an industrial recruitment business, we have had the pleasure of placing hundreds in the right jobs locally.
Do you employ EU Staff?
If you employ EU staff, you may wish to speak to them directly about the Settlement Scheme. If you feel unsure about your obligations as an employer, we have put together our guide based on The Home Office Employer Toolkit.
Firstly, the Scheme will allow EU citizens and their family members to remain living and working in the UK, if they are already resident or arrive here before the 31 December 2020 and they have until 30th June 2021 to apply.
The individual is to make an application to the EU settlement scheme. An employer must not discriminate against EU citizens depending on the individual having made an application.
Employers are to continue with your ‘right to work checks until the end of 2020.
There will be no change to the rights and status of EU citizens living in the UK until 2021.
Employers are not expected to fund/support the cost of their employees’ application, and you have no legal obligation to communicate the EU Settlement Scheme.
You will not be required to undertake retrospective checks on existing EU employees when the UK transitions to the future skills-based immigration system.
While there is no legal obligation for you to communicate the EU Settlement Scheme – you may wish to support and communicate the toolkit but not provide immigration advice.
